European licensed online poker site Run It Once Poker will cease global operations as of January 3, 2022.
According to founder Phil Galfond:
Run It Once Poker is now headed down a path to enter the legal & regulated US market.. .in order to head in that direction, we’re shutting down our Rest of World operations and focusing fully on getting our platform complete and prepared to operate in the US regulated environment.
The site failed to gain much traction with consumers in the regulated poker market despite a some high profile PR – including the “Galfond challenge” – where the Founder Galfond played various high-stakes challenges vs tough opponents including Chance Kornuth, Bill Perkins and Online pros ‘Venividi’ and “Actionfreak”.
Promotions on the site included Sit and Go leaderboards, poker rakeback and deposit bonuses – but little in the way of marketing.
RIO’s goal to enter the regulated US poker market could be well-timed, as more and more states put legislation in place to bring online poker and online sportsbetting to consumers in order to generate tax revenues.
Online gambling is currently legal in a multitude of U.S states including
- New Jersey
- West Virginia
